Full role migration from site work to office work in E&P

When we are assigned with a job in a area new to us, it’s not only coming out from our comfort zone, but new challenges and fear of uncertainty creeps in. This is where in my opinion sticking to your values or your being flowing to the function helps a lot.

One my real life example is –

I joined E&P in 1991 in construction department. That time it was pure construction and we were no where involved with Projects or Engineering work. There were no consultants like Dusturco appointed that time.

After working for 5 years, I was transferred to Electrical Engineering department. Now this was 180 deg change at that that time. Migration from 100% site work to 100% office work, designing, negotiation, Procurement function, meeting with senior management etc. But I took this opportunity for learning new things, started engaging with colleague and seniors. Started learning IBM system. I had to reopen the text books. To my surprise it went very well, people there in Engineering started respecting me for 1. My hard work, 2. My desire to learn 3. My knowledge of field work 4. My good interpersonal relationship. Very soon many engineering officers started taking my advice on experience of actual site conditions and field work and in turn taught me insights of engineering, project and procurement work. I worked there for 3 years and was assigned with many important jobs. I had a record of completing all the projects in time and successfully.

There are many other examples also in my life for complete job area change and every time I learnt many things. The biggest learning is that, if we believe in ourselves, show confidence in our ability and apply ourselves to new work, there will be definite success.

Example in response to question: Scenario where you have been given a job in an area that is not of interest to you. How would the logic of being flowing into function apply here and impact the work.
